I was told that I’m not a porcelain veneers candidate.
Home/Blog / I was told that I’m not a porcelain veneers candidate.
When I made an appointment with the cosmetic dentist, I was told that I’m not a porcelain veneers candidate. This is very disappointing to me. I’ve always wanted to improve the look of my smile and my cousin told me to get porcelain veneers. Do I have other options?

Paula,
When porcelain veneers are done by an excellent cosmetic dentist, they truly can be life-changing. You didn’t mention why you were told that you aren’t a porcelain veneers candidate. So, it is difficult to give you specific recommendations. However, here are some general barriers when it comes to porcelain veneers. The good news is that you still have other options.
Second Opinion From Another Cosmetic Dentist
Cosmetic dentistry is actually not a recognized specialty area within dentistry. Therefore, any dentist can self-proclaim themselves a cosmetic dentist. In order to do beautiful porcelain veneers requires extensive training beyond dental school. It requires a passion for transformation and beauty. And not every dentist is capable. So, it is always wise to seek a second opinion. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is an excellent organization and can be a good indicator. If a dentist is affiliated with the AACD, they likely have a vested interest in cosmetic dentistry.
It is always possible the “cosmetic dentist” that you had your original appointment with, may not be comfortable doing veneers for whatever reason. Getting a second opinion will either confirm that and if that is indeed the case, they will be able to provide you with other treatment alternatives. Or, it is possible that you may still be able to get porcelain veneers. Don’t take this one dentist’s word for it.
Common Reasons You Are Not a Porcelain Veneers Candidate
Usually, there are common reasons porcelain veneers may not be right for you. Periodontal disease, grinding or TMJ issues and uneven or crooked teeth. All of these conditions can be treated and when each is addressed, porcelain veneers may not be completely out of the picture. For example, grinding (bruxism) may occur even if you aren’t aware of it. Many people grind at night. A simply nightguard can protect your dental work and help prevent TMJ. A mouth guard can also protect cosmetic dentistry.
Talk with a reputable cosmetic dentist you can trust to better understand the different treatment options that may work well for your specific case.
Other Treatment Options
If you truly are not a porcelain veneers candidate, talk with your cosmetic dentist about your desires. Is it a chip or gap in your front teeth that bothers you? Or is it the discoloration of your teeth? It could be that some other cosmetic dentistry treatment may better address your needs. Dental bonding corrects minor chips and there are all kinds of teeth whitening options for discolored teeth.
Thank you for your question. Hopefully, this provides you with some tips to help you be well on your way to the beautiful smile of your dreams.
